Salmon are incredible creatures — and they have a lot to teach us. About resilience. About family. Endurance. Strength. About showing up fully for life. And maybe most of all, they remind us that the best things in life are worth waiting for.

Salmon are incredible creatures — and they have a lot to teach us. About resilience. About family. Endurance. Strength. About showing up fully for life. And maybe most of all, they remind us that the best things in life are worth waiting for.
Their story begins in the quiet, shallow waters inland — surrounded by tundra, sometimes mountains, always under the magic of the midnight sun. Here, in a hidden streambed or tucked away cove on a pristine lake, salmon begin their lives.
They hatch from tiny eggs, nestled in what’s called a redd — a carefully sculpted nest made by the female. The male swims just above, in perfect sync, ready to spawn. Together, they give everything to ensure the future — their legacy, their offspring, and even the ecosystem itself. As they die, their bodies release vital nutrients into the water, feeding the next generation.
Through the long, dark winter months, baby salmon — called fry — emerge from the gravel, staying close to their birthplace. Some remain in the freshwater for a year or more, depending on the species, feeding and growing strong enough for the journey downstream.
Then, the ocean calls. And they answer.
They spend up to 1–7 years in the saltwater, depending on the species — feeding, dodging predators, growing into powerful fish built for the epic swim home. And somehow, through currents and chaos, they find their way back to the exact place they were born.
To spawn.
To die.
To complete the cycle.
And in doing so, they give everything — once more — to the next generation.

Michelle’s connection to Bristol Bay runs deep. On her mother’s Alaskan Native side, her family has lived and fished the pristine waters of the Bay for countless generations. On her father’s side, she’s a third-generation fisherman — carrying on a proud family tradition from both sides.
The name Sunlight Seafoods LLC is more than just a business — it’s family history. The original F/V Sunlight was a wooden fishing boat run by Michelle’s grandfather during the 1960s and ’70s. Later, "Sunlight" became the VHF radio call sign used by her grandmother. Michelle and her siblings would call out to her over the radio from their fish camp down on South Naknek beach — a memory woven into every part of this journey.
When Michelle isn’t out on the water fishing, she’s dreaming about it. Her life revolves around fish — not just as a career, but as a deep passion and purpose. It’s that love for the ocean, the fish, and the people who harvest them that inspired her to share the healthiest protein on the planet directly with you.
And in 2019, that dream came to life. Michelle proudly began sourcing the highest quality seafood from wild, sustainable stocks — harvested from the pristine waters of Alaska.
